The TOTEM range, from Dutch company Kidsonroof, is a remarkable construction system made from recycled paper. Fully biodegradable, it is decorated with natural images and textures, as well as some cunningly placed ecological messages.
Distributed in the UK by Asobi, the TOTEM line-up is highlighted by the Tree, which is made up of more than 170 tough cardboard pieces and assembles into a tree 70cm high and 60cm wide.
The first thing that catches the eye when you open the box is the photography on the sheets of press-out pieces. From leaves superimposed on a subway map to a display of crushed cans, the sheets are beautiful.
It’s almost a shame to press the pieces out to get constructing, but once you take the plunge you are left with a pile of pieces representing leaves, fruit, mushrooms and the tree itself, as well as a pair of birds and a bird house. Connecting pieces are used to attach the elements together and you are free to assemble the tree in any way you like.
In fact, one of our testers quickly cottoned on to the fact that you can create whatever you want with the pieces – joining the birdhouse up with a leaf to make a space rocket. Not as ecologically sound as a tree, perhaps, but imaginative nonetheless.
The easy construction system makes it a simple matter to move a few leaves around, house the birds on a different branch or make the tree lose all its leaves for winter. You can make a collection of smaller sculptures and even add your own designs if you really get into the mood and have some cardboard handy.
This is a captivating craft set – one that creates a truly original and beautiful piece of artwork that can be enjoyed for a long time. The freestyle element, as well as the subtle environmental message carried within the pieces, makes this one of the most striking toys we’ve had the pleasure of reviewing.
